The NRS inflatable paddle board product line hits every category, from race/touring models to all round boards, to river specialty shapes. The brand is particularly strong in specialty fishing boards, offering models with pontoons and attachment points for fishing rods.
NRS has existed on the river paddling scene long before SUP was a thing and some of its history in inflatable rafting has led to some different design choices compared with most other inflatable paddle boards. Some quirks to the NRS product line to be aware of are the Lealfield inflation valve, which is somewhat common in the boating industry but is definitely non-standard in the SUP market, and pressure relief valves, which are not widely used on SUP boards. Fins on NRS boards are also brand-specific and are secured by attachment plates with a plastic tab and safety string.
The majority of inflatable SUP buyers are looking for a board that does a lot of things well and doesn’t try to just excel at one particular thing. The NRS Thrive series consists of four similarly shaped boards which vary mainly by size to appeal to paddlers of varying sizes, weight and stability needs. The boards in the middle of the range, the Thrive 10.3 and 10.8 will work well as an all-around board for most paddlers. Keep in mind that the 10.8 is 6 inches thick, so it is really best suited to larger riders who need the extra volume of a thicker board. For paddlers under 200 lb, the 10.3, which is 5” thick, will be a better fit, as it rides lower in the water for a more stable feeling. The Thrive 9.10 is geared toward youth and ultra-light paddlers and the 11.0 is a high volume board for very large riders.
Touring SUP boards are designed for covering distances as efficiently as possible and NRS offers three boards in this category. The 11.6 ESCAPE is a mid-length touring board with 32” of width for stability. The 12.6 ESCAPE is a standard racing length and is 30” wide, which provides a nice balance of speed and stability. The 14.0 ESCAPE is 29” wide, the narrowest of the group, so it is for paddlers who really want to go fast and have good enough balance to paddle a narrower board.
The NRS Whip series boards are designed for the specific purpose of surfing river waves. These are relatively short boards with high nose rocker and extra width toward the nose. The 7.8 WHIP and 8.4 WHIP are very similarly shaped, so the choice between the two will depend on the rider’s weight and the type of wave most likely to be surfed, with the 7.8 having an advantage in tighter ‘hole’ type waves and the 8.4 excelling on larger, more gradual waves.
NRS Quiver series boards, available in 9’8” and 10’4” lengths, are designed specifically for downstream river running. They are built wide for stability in turbulent water and are made thick to give them a lot of volume to glide over eddy lines and boils. Extra rocker at the nose and tail make it easier to clear waves and holes and enhance pivoting for quick turning moves.
The NRS Osprey is a wide and high volume board equipped with mounting plates for attaching rod holders and other fishing attachments. Bungee systems at the front and back are there to hold tackle bags, coolers and other gear. The NRS Heron is similarly equipped but has enhanced stability from the addition of pontoon-like outrigger tubes along each side. The Heron is available in olive green or in a classic camo version.
The NRS Mayra is a specialty board with enhanced side to side and front to back stability for Yoga. The deck pad is shaped similarly to a Yoga mat and has a soft texture that is easy on the body and on bare feet. The Mayra is equipped with four d-rings at the nose for attaching a strap or bungee to tie down supplies.
The NRS Youth Amp is a board proportioned for kids and small riders under 115 lb. Its 29” narrow width lets smaller riders paddle without having to reach too far to the side, and at 9’2” of length, it is manageable for kids to carry. It has a versatile all-around shape that lets young riders develop skills in different areas of paddle boarding, including flat water, whitewater, and surfing.
All NRS inflatable SUP boards come with a rolling bag, manual pump, and fins. . The provided bag is sturdy and has wheels to facilitate travel. The included manual pump is designed to work with the non-standard Lealfield valves that are used on NRS boards.
NRS SUP boards purchased from Pumped Up SUP also come with an option of a discounted carbon hybrid paddle (or choice of full carbon paddle discounted upgrade), a coiled, straight or hybrid leash (or upgrade to a releasable river leash). Other accessories that you shouldn’t be without can be added at a discount at the time of board purchase, including a portable 12V electric SUP pump that takes the effort out of inflating your board, and a choice of discounted NRS personal flotation devices.
